Great Gatsby movie vs book free essay sample

I believe that the filmmakers translated the great Gatsby very well from text to the big screen, showing life back in the early nineteen hundreds with the glamour of the high society. Although the transition from text to film was very good there were some changes but there are always changes for example the â€Å"iron man† comics were very different from the films but change and adaptation is sometimes necessary for growth and the ever-evolving world. In the novel Nick and Gatsby meet at the first party nick is invited too. Nick striking up a conversation with a man that he describes to be about his age, sharing war stories and they make plans to socialize the next day. Nick then exclaims he still hasn’t met the host and the man explains he is in fact Gatsby. However in the movie Gatsby being played by Leonardo DiCaprio it would give it away that he’s the man Nick has been waiting to meet so instead Gatsby over hears Nick say he hasn’t met the host and Gatsby turns around and says I’m Gatsby. We will write a custom essay sample on Great Gatsby movie vs book or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One thing I did notice about DiCaprio playing Gatsby was he over used Gatsby saying â€Å"old sport† in the book he does say it a fair amount but not as much as he does in the film. In the book it seemed very much so that Jordan Baker and Nick were a thing, after their tea date it describes Nick and Jordan having a moment where they kiss. The fact that nick doesn’t get home until two in the morning it seems that it worked out pretty good for him. In the film you can see that there may be some feelings between the two but never shows the interaction of nick drawing her closer and then eventually as he describes â€Å"this time I drew here even closer this time to my face†. Although in the movie he still doesn’t get home until very late at night. They could have left this part out because of time restrictions or because the director could have felt it wasn’t an important part that he had to show to make the story line flow. Gatsby died thinking he was a winner, with him never getting to the phone to realize its only Nick on the phone and not Daisy. In the book it has him climbing aboard a float, his butler waiting for the call long after there is anyone to give it to if a call ever came and his chauffer hearing the shots. The movie takes a different approach, where Gatsby dives into the pool and climbs out as the phone rings thinking he is getting the call he is waiting for from his love Daisy. As he’s climbing out Wilson takes his shot and Gatsby falls back into the pool and dies while Nick is on the line and can hear the gunshots. As Gatsby dies he is thinking he won he thinks he was climbing out of the pool to answer the phone with daisy on the line saying she has decided to be with him although we all know it was Nick. After the fact when Gatsby has passed and Nick is grieving his death in the book Gatsby’s father shows up to say good-bye to his son. In the movie there is no mention or appearances of his father coming to say good-bye to his son. Over all I enjoyed both the classic novel and the new Jay Z type spin on the film, however I do think Baz Luhrmann did a very good job of keeping this historical classic alive in todays times. Changing some key things but still keeping the original story line, some true die hard Gatsby fans may not be as impressed with this edition to the Gatsby collection because of some of the changes such as his death. Despite the changes from the book to movie, it stayed true to the theme. I think this will still be a classic movie based on the book by Scott F. Fitzgerald for many years to come until eventually they will remake it once again.
